The following are some synonyms of neodymium trichloride:

  • neodymium trichloride
  • neodymium(III) chloride
  • neodymium chloride

The oxidation number of neodymium in neodymium trichloride is 3.

Synthesis

Nd2O3 + 6NH4Cl → 2NdCl3 + 3H2O + 6NH3

Pure anhydrous chloride neodymium(III) chloride may be made by heating a mixture of solid neodymium oxide, Nd2O3, and ammonium chloride. This is folloiwed by extended heating under vacuum at 300-320°C to remove excess ammonium chloride. The product is moisture sensitive and formed as a powder. Pure samples of other lanthanide chlorides can be made in similar fashion.
