Atomic spectra

When atoms in the gas phase by an electric discharge are excited they emit light. Each element produces a unique set of emitted wavelengths of different colours. The appearance of the resulting atomic spectra after splitting by a prism is a series of lines (a line spectrum) against a dark background.

Notes

The atomic spectra images (simulated electrical gas discharge spectra) were produced using a modified version of discharge.java ( John Talbot, 1997) using data derived from a data collection published by NASA generated from reference 2.
